How to use this file
Use this brief as product context for writing website copy, app descriptions, social posts, advertisements, onboarding content, and video scripts. The feature descriptions reflect the current implementation. Audience recommendations and sample copy are proposed messaging, not customer research or testimonials.
When generating marketing content, use the capabilities described here. Keep the review step visible when describing scanning. Treat pricing, public availability, download links, and customer results as unknown unless the owner supplies them.
What the app is
PaperNest is an Android app that helps people capture receipts, review their details, keep them organized, and find or export them later. Users photograph a receipt or import existing images and PDFs. On-device text recognition suggests the merchant, date, and total. The user checks those suggestions, makes any corrections, chooses a group, and saves the receipt with its image.
Saved receipts become a searchable visual library. Users can organize them by job, project, or another group they create, browse by year and month, see spending totals for a selected date range, and export CSV reports or organized image ZIPs. The app works without creating a PaperNest account.
One-sentence description: PaperNest turns receipt photos into organized, searchable expense records with on-device scanning, editable details, and exports.
Primary promise: Capture a receipt, check the details, and keep it easy to find.
Existing app headline: “A little more organized.”
Suggested tagline: “Your receipts, organized.”
The problem it helps solve
Receipts are easy to leave in a wallet, glove box, email attachment, or camera roll. A photo preserves the paper, but it does not automatically make that purchase easy to find, group with a job, or include in a spending total.
PaperNest connects the image to a date, amount, editable receipt name, and group. That gives people a practical way to maintain purchase records and gather them when preparing a reimbursement, reviewing project purchases, or handing records to someone who handles their books.
The user benefit is less manual organization and a clearer record of the receipts they save. Any time savings depend on receipt quality and the user’s workflow; the project does not establish a universal time-saving figure.
Intended audiences
These are feature-based audience hypotheses, consistent with the existing growth plan. They should be validated with users before claiming product-market fit.
| Audience | Relevant need | Useful message |
|---|---|---|
| Independent contractors and tradespeople | Keep purchase receipts together for each job | “Keep every job’s receipts together.” |
| Freelancers and small-business owners | Maintain a manageable collection of purchase records | “Save the receipt now. Find the details later.” |
| Gig workers | Organize receipts for work-related purchases | “Give your work receipts a place to belong.” |
| Employees preparing reimbursements | Gather receipt images and a spending report | “Keep your receipts ready for your next expense report.” |
| Households and everyday shoppers | Find purchase records and review spending | “Find a purchase without scrolling through your camera roll.” |
| People working with a bookkeeper | Export organized records for an external handoff | “Bring organized receipt records to the conversation.” |
The existing growth plan prioritizes contractors because custom groups map well to jobs and projects. This is a positioning choice, not evidence of current adoption.
Main user journey
- Start at Home. See the current month’s saved-receipt total, receipt count, and recent receipts. Open a recent receipt or choose Scan or import receipt.
- Add a receipt. Choose Take photo or Import files. Import one image, multiple images, or a supported PDF.
- Let PaperNest suggest the details. Automatic scanning is enabled by default. Users can also run Scan Receipt or Scan All themselves.
- Review the image and fields. Check the date, total, and receipt name. Choose between detected candidates or enter corrections. Pinch to zoom, drag to move, and double-tap to reset the preview.
- Choose a group and save. Use General, choose an existing group, or create a new one. Tap Save Receipt. For multiple images, review and save each receipt.
- Find the record later. Search in Receipts, change the sort order, or browse groups, years, and months. Open the original image or edit the saved record.
- Review totals and export. In Insights, choose a group and date range. Review the matching receipts, then export a CSV report or receipt images.

Scanning, explained simply
OCR means text recognition: the app reads visible text in a receipt image and uses it to suggest useful fields. On Android, PaperNest uses Google ML Kit’s on-device Latin-script text recognizer. Desktop development uses Tesseract.
The Settings screen offers three scan modes:
- Accurate: The default; includes additional attempts for unclear details and processes up to two receipts at a time on Android.
- Smart: A quicker scan with a focused retry for unclear details.
- Fast: One scan, intended for sharp, well-lit receipts.
Users can switch automatic scanning on or off and see the last scan timing. The code also retains a legacy “Batch accurate” preference, but it is hidden from the current Settings choices; do not present it as a fourth visible mode.
Useful marketing wording: “PaperNest suggests the details. You check and save.” The review labels are heuristic indicators, not guaranteed accuracy percentages. Avoid promises of perfect extraction, instant results, or support for every language.
What a saved record contains
A saved receipt has an image reference, receipt date, amount, editable display name, group, and creation time. A name can be generated from the merchant and detected details, then changed by the user. General is the default group.
CSV reports include receipt ID, receipt name, group, receipt date, amount, image name, image path, and creation time, plus report-level period, count, and total. Receipt-image exports are ZIP archives, not exported PDF reports.
Totals describe saved receipts in the selected period. PaperNest does not discover all purchases automatically or obtain a complete spending history from a bank.
Privacy and data handling: messaging context
The implementation stores receipt data locally and runs Android text recognition on the device. There is no PaperNest account or receipt-upload backend in the reviewed application. Android cloud backup is disabled in the build configuration. Core receipt storage, organization, and recognition are designed around local use.
The repository’s privacy policy states that receipt images, extracted text, and financial details are not sent to the developer or Google. It separately explains that the ML Kit SDK may collect diagnostic and usage information. Therefore, “on-device receipt scanning” and “no PaperNest account required” are useful claims; “zero data collection” or “never uses the internet” are too broad.
Users choose when to export files. Exports stored outside the app can remain after deleting a receipt or uninstalling the app. Local storage is not a promise of cloud recovery, end-to-end encryption, or an encrypted document vault. Avoid describing the app as a backup service. Consult the project privacy policy when preparing public privacy copy; this brief is a product summary.
Positioning and message priorities
Lead with the practical outcome: a receipt becomes a record the user can find. Then explain scanning, review, organization, and exports in that order.
- Keep receipts organized. Connect images with dates, totals, and groups.
- Reduce repetitive entry. Start from suggested details and correct them.
- Find the record again. Use search, sorting, and visual browsing.
- Prepare a useful handoff. Export records and supporting images.
- Keep receipt handling local. Explain on-device recognition and account-free use.
Useful combinations to highlight are the original image beside editable details, project-style groups with totals, and both CSV and image exports. These are product strengths supported by the implementation, not claims of uniqueness or superiority over competitors.
Ready-to-use copy
Short product description
PaperNest helps you scan, organize, and find your receipts. Take a photo or import images and PDFs, review the suggested details, save receipts into groups, and export reports when you need them.
Longer product description
Give your receipts a place to belong. PaperNest turns receipt photos and imported files into an organized collection of purchase records on your Android phone.
On-device scanning suggests the merchant, date, and total. Check the original image, correct any details, and save the receipt into a group for your project, job, or everyday purchases. Search by name, group, date, or amount, or browse your receipts by year and month.
Use Insights to see totals for a selected period, then export a CSV report and organized receipt images for your next spreadsheet update or records handoff. No PaperNest account is required.
Headlines

Calls to action
- See how PaperNest works.
- Watch the receipt walkthrough.
- Organize your next receipt.
- Explore PaperNest.
Use “Download,” “Install,” or “Join the test” only when the matching destination and availability are supplied. Use placeholders in drafts rather than inventing links.
Short video concept
Open on a receipt image. Show Import files, then the detected date and total. Pause on the review step, save the receipt, and show it in the library. End with a search or date-range total and the line “Your receipts, organized.”
An existing 90-second phone walkthrough shows this flow on a physical Pixel 9 Pro. Its example is a June 3, 2026 Tim Hortons receipt for $11.39. It appears in the yearly total; the October monthly total stays at zero. Keep that distinction intact when editing clips or writing captions.

Current boundaries for marketing claims
- Availability and price: A locally verified Android debug build exists. Public store availability, pricing, subscriptions, launch dates, and download URLs are not established by this review. Do not infer “free forever” from source code.
- Platforms: Android is the demonstrated phone platform. Desktop execution is documented for development. An iPhone app, web app, and released desktop product are not established.
- Accounting scope: No bank synchronization, tax filing, invoicing, mileage tracking, reimbursement approval, payroll, or direct accounting integration is implemented in the reviewed app. CSV export is a file handoff.
- Currency: Records have no separate currency field. The UI shows dollar amounts and CSV headers currently say USD. Do not claim multi-currency support, currency detection, exchange conversion, or reliable mixed-currency totals.
- Recognition: Results depend on image quality and receipt format. The app does not save structured line items, tax breakdowns, or every printed field as separate searchable data. Search covers saved metadata, not all OCR text in every image.
- Batch workflow: Multiple images can be scanned, then reviewed and saved individually. A separate batch-review component exists in the code but is not wired into the normal capture flow; do not promise a one-tap bulk-save experience.
- PDFs: Up to 25 pages are rendered as separate drafts. Do not promise unlimited PDFs, multipage receipt merging, or preservation of the source PDF as the exported image.
- Search: The current library shows up to 200 matching records; narrowing the query finds more specific results. This is a display limit, not a 200-receipt storage cap.
- Storage: No cloud sync, automatic cross-device restoration, shared team workspace, or app-level encrypted vault is implemented. Exports should not be described as a full backup-and-restore feature.
- Performance proof: The repository reports a 29% batch-time reduction for ten fixtures in one before/after Pixel test. That is a scoped engineering measurement, not a universal speed promise. Do not turn it into a general customer outcome.
Inputs the marketing owner can add later
Supply the current store or testing link, commercial terms, launch status, chosen audience, geographic focus, support destination, and approved logo assets when available. Customer testimonials and quantified outcomes need their own evidence. These details are not necessary to use the descriptive copy above.
Source map and review scope
The review covered the entrypoint, app setup, every Python module’s classes and callable inventory, screen and component layouts, receipt storage and business services, OCR and image-processing structure, Android configuration, test coverage inventory, and existing product and device-verification documents. Capability claims were checked against the relevant implementations and visible workflows. This documentation task did not rerun the app’s test suite or reverify every feature on a phone.
